Free tools for remote workers
A starter set of free tools for documents, meetings, tasks and design.
You can set up a professional remote workspace without paying for software. Free plans change, so check the current limits before you rely on one.
Documents, spreadsheets and email
Google Docs, Sheets and Gmail are free with a Google account, and you can share and edit files with clients in real time. Microsoft's online versions of Word, Excel and Outlook also offer free use with a Microsoft account.
Video calls
Google Meet and Zoom both have free plans. Free plans often limit meeting length or the number of people, so test before an important call.
Tasks and notes
Trello (boards and cards) and Notion (notes and simple databases) both have free plans that are enough for one person or a small project.
Design
Canva has a free plan for posters, social media posts and simple documents. It's useful for making your own flyers and images.
Keep your files safe
Store your important files in a cloud drive such as Google Drive, so one lost phone or laptop doesn't cost you your work.
Don't forget the basics
- A backup internet connection, such as a second SIM or a mobile hotspot.
- A power bank for outages.
- A simple way to track your hours. My Monthly Timesheet template works in Excel and Google Sheets.
